Greetings! I’ve decided to start a blog in order to build a community of home-based business owners who are looking for a more effective way to build their business than using their warm market; people who would like to start the new year in a better position with the right information. I am a 45-year-old mother of two girls, ages 13 and 10. I have been teaching in public schools for more than 20 years in different capacities, currently part-time as a reading specialist at the elementary level.Three years ago I was introduced to line of anti-aging skin care. A good friend of mine had decided to build a business with this company, which was relatively new to this area of New England, and she dropped off some samples telling me that I would not believe how great my skin would feel after just one day. Having always been a soap and water girl, for convenience and cost, I was a bit skeptical. However, she was right! After one day my skin felt softer than it had in ages. After three days, my husband said, “Are you doing something different with your face?!” I just smiled. After ten days, he said, “No, really, what is it, a new make-up?” I didn’t have any on at the time. Of course, I was sold and I signed up for a wholesale account to get the products at a discount, not intending to add to my full-time teaching position at the time.However, after seven months, when my dear friend reached a level of management where she received the company car and was able to quit her part-time job, I decided to take another look. I launched my business with a large party and lots of friends, colleagues and neighbors attended. I was excited to share all the fabulous natural and beneficial products that the company had beyond the skin care line. For the next two plus years I attempted to build a business like my friend had, with little or no success. Exactly one year ago I sent out a letter to everyone that I knew renewing my commitment to building my business and asking for their help in hosting parties or referring me to their friends. I had decided to follow the company recommendations to the letter! After three frustrating months of cancelled and non-rescheduled events and people backing out of their commitments, I was looking for a different way!! I had spent so much money attending company trainings and buying company sales materials and buying products that I gave away because I was told that, “it will come back to you…” and of course it did, but in the form of bills! I really looked at the compensation plan and took in the fact that only 4% of consultants were earning what my friend was earning. The argument that not all consultants were building businesses, some were just getting products at a discount, no longer washed with me. All that my husband had warned me about was true! I was just an optimist who thought that if my friend could do it, so could I!! I had just as many friends, I was gregarious, I was able to tell a great story about why I loved the products and how they worked for me. Finally, in May, while surfing the ‘net for answers, I found some help. I found a place where I am learning to build a business in today’s world. I learned that the warm market methods worked back in the 50’s when the original network marketing companies (you know the ones, they’re still around!) started up. This was at a time when people were just moving into the suburbs, most moms were home, people were not as skeptical or bombarded with as much information every day. I also learned that consultants like me were my company’s best customers!! Ouch, that stung…I realized that it was true. I had bought the dream of financial freedom, hook line and sinker. With that understanding and perspective I realized that it was not my fault that I couldn’t build a networking business in today’s world because I was using yesterday’s techniques!I know that I’m not the only one out there with a story to tell, I’d love to hear yours!
